The Great Migration

It’s been a while, but I’m still alive and still very nerdy.

I’ve since moved houses and need to look into moving my server. As it stands, the server is in an unfinished laundry, on top of an old file cabinet.
Obviously, I can’t leave it there, so I need to move it.

Here’s the catch tho, I need a quiet server now. It’ll be in a spare bedroom (Right next to the FTTP and router, as opposed to being connected with a 25m CAT5e cable) and it cannot be loud.

So I have a few options in terms of hardware.
1. Mini PC + NAS – good for size but no room for a GPU or upgradability.
2. ATX Case with eATX motherboard from old server + current CPU + GTX 1050 + RAID card (new) + NAS (For mass media storage + backups)
This will allow for a RAID 3 setup for internal storage, upgradabilty, and the option for a GPU
This also means getting new hardware. Such as 4x 500GB SSD drives, a SATA RAID card, as well as the
case, PSU, RAM, etc

Personally, I think option 2 is the way to go. Once the hardware is ready to go, I can migrate the nonreplaceable data and setup everything:

VMs:

  • Ubuntu
  • PiHole/Tailscale
  • iRedMail
  • PufferPanel
  • Windows Server 2025 (NordVPN, qBittorrent, Plex)

Docker containers:

  • Homarr
  • Radar
  • Sonarr
  • Portainer
  • NPM
  • Prowlarr
  • Brazarr
  • Overseerr
  • NGINX
  • Unifi Console

Another thing I gotta figure out is the naming convention for this all. Currently, the server is named after ships from Interstellar (Endurance, Ranger, etc)
I honestly don’t know what new naming convention to use, guess that’s something I still have to figure out.

Hopefully the next update comes from a new server, without any issues.

Cheers, R
